The Word of a Bear
The Fourth Entry of the personal journal of Nowhere.
The more I travel in the world, the more I am amazed by it. As much as I learned from my master, I have come to realize I know very little. It has been a few days since my last entry and much has happened.
The first night passes easily, and our first part of the day was much the same. Around mid-day we came upon a strange stone archway. There was writing on it in a strange script. Ardyn seemed to be able to decipher it, and he was able to tell us that it was something that his people would use regularly. Something of a path marking, and a wishing of good luck. I find that I grew quite fond of the elf in spite of the short time he was with us. But I am getting ahead of myself.
We passed through the archway and reached the edge of the forest. We spent the night just off the path, and dove into the murky gloom of Lurkwood early the next morning well rested. The first few days of our journey in the forest were simple. We decided to travel during the night and sleep during the day, as it seemed that most of the creatures in the forest were most active at night. Nothing disturbed us, and traveling was surprisingly easy. On the third night, we found a sizable clearing for rest. While we were setting up camp we were accosted by several twig blights and vicious vines.
Though not uncommon in deep woods, the creatures posed a problem. However, with some handy spell work from Blank and some good shoves and assaults from Ardyn and myself we dealt with them well. With that out of the way, we settled in for a sleep. Ardyn was watching, when he heard something moving in the shadows of the forest. He woke Blank and I. No sooner had he done so, an unnatural darkness descended on our camp. I managed to use the darkness to my advantage and caught a glimpse of what I can only assume was the creature Ardyn heard. It was a frightening creature. It was ogre like, but blue skinned and much more intelligent eyes. With a quiet prayer to the lady of the dark I went looking for the others. With her guidance I found them and together we managed to evade the creature. However, that did mean that we had to leave all of our supplies behind. We decided to give the creature some time, then circled back to retrieve our things, which to our great luck, were in tact. We kept a very careful watch after that. Traveling along the next night, we spotted what seemed to be a game path off the main track. Thinking it might be worth investigating we traveled down it. What we found was a simple hut, with some very heavy defenses. As cautiously as possible, Blank made his way to the door. The creature that opened the door was a very large...bear. We are all somewhat taken a back, but he graciously invited us into his hut and was very hospitable. He offered us drink and allowed us to rest in his hut while he left for a time. However, a bear is not who returned. It was in fact, an elven man. His name was Alden, and he had been living in the forest for close to 50 years.
Which was as long as he had been a werebear. He seemed a very sad person. I have wondered why he stayed away from his people for so long. He told us that he had indeed seen a tiefling in the forest about a week past, and offered to escort us through some of the forest. We also asked about the Oni (which as we learned from Alden is the name of the blue skinned ogre,) and learned that it is in the employ of a hag that makes the forest her home. Alden does not concern himself over much with the hag. They give each other a wide berth as they know a fight would leave them both the worse for wear.
We started down the path today day to get some traveling in before dark. With Alden becoming a bear at night, we did not feel it necessary to be nocturnal any longer. It was a quiet travel for a few hours until suddenly a pair of...wildly striking people, I assume they were Fey, appeared and demanded for Ardyn to go with them. He seemed to understand why they were taking him, and that they had specific business with him. I was sad to see our elf friend go so suddenly, but Blank and I have a job to do, and another tiefling to meet. The rest of the day passed easily, and we set up camp without issue. Before bedding down for the night, Blank asked if he could try something on me. I reluctantly agreed. I'm not entirely sure what he did, but he succeeded in making me feel ill, which was all the effect I could tell. I don't think I will be letting him experiment on me again. I write while endeavoring not to vomit on him or me. So far I am meeting with success, but I don't know how long that success will hold. For now, I will put my pen and ink away, and try and sleep off what ever magic Blank has done to me.
